NBA 2K18 News: Visual Concepts on How Fans Shaped the Game, MyGM

Wednesday, August 2, 2017 7:46:17 PM America/Los_Angeles

The NBA 2K18 release date is a bit under two months off and you can really begin to tell that the team at developers Visual Concepts are ramping up the hype ahead of launch.

Following the reveal of the NBA 2K18 cover superstar - Cleveland Cavaliers Point Guard Kyrie Irving in case you were wondering - and the launch of a few of the games first extraordinarily detailed screenshots, concentrate for the team has changed towards emphasizing the new game modes for 2K18.

Last week, Visual Concepts outlined their plans for the games long running franchise mode, MyGM, and a fairly significant step that adds a narrative-driven attention to the normal franchise experience of managing a teams roster and finances.

"In a space where other developers continually shy away, the team here in Visual Concepts has once again delivered a strong and thoughtful list of franchise characteristics that will keep you coming back for more," boldly proclaimed Erick Boenisch, Senior Producer on NBA 2K18.

The NBA 2K18 Facebook article also touches on a whole lot more than just the MyGM Mode, for example new "super max" contracts, a 14-player roster minimal and also the integration of the NBA G League (formerly the D-League).

In truth though, there were far too many details to delve into right here, so we'd implore fans to head over to the blog post to get a good read to see what's changing in the new year ahead.

Fortunately though, we were able to catch Producer Erick Boenisch briefly for a very quick discussion, in which the Visual Concepts veteran discussed the strides taken my MyGM within the past few years, the significance of the NBA 2K community at steering the game and "large-scale" features they are worked towards for the decades ahead.

Erick Boenisch: The concept of a whole control mode in 2K15's MyLEAGUE. Team Relocation (and the full package of resources that users can create) in 2K16. League Expansion at 2K17.

When you look around in the numerous sports games offered, story-based career styles are becoming the norm; together with other programmers following lawsuit on our popular MyCAREER mode.

I really see plenty of value in telling a story from the other side of the spectrum. Career-based modes are all about you the player. What you could accomplish. How many titles you may win.

MyGM: The following Chapter places you as the GM of your favourite team and presents you with the decision after decision after decision, all from an entirely different angle. That angle is one of management.

How will you deal with your owner? How will you manage your star player when he comes to you? How will you handle other key characters in the story whom I don't wish to spoil here (sorry!) ?

It is a fun and compelling new take on playing franchise modes and I am pleased to introduce it to all of our fans out there.

Erick Boenisch: that's a really challenging question to answer, since the answer is simply known within the walls of every development studio.

What I can tell you is that we know how many people play the MyGM and MyLEAGUE modes, and those use amounts are very healthy.

Annually, we strive to innovate in this area in new ways which other games haven't.

I genuinely feel as we provide our fans a compelling reason to play every new edition of the match. I think that it could be easy to fall into a trap in which you slowly add less and less features to certain regions of the game, which naturally, results in significantly less and less people playing stated features.

Luckily, for us, we are continuing to develop thanks to both the passionate development team here in Visual Concepts, and needless to say, our rabid fan base who inspire us to reach for the stars each and every day.
