FIFA 18 Nintendo Switch Review At Mmorog

Monday, October 9, 2017 1:13:54 AM America/Los_Angeles

First, let's just get something straight from the gate - the version of FIFA 18 about the Nintendo Switch is different than the one that you'll play on either the Xbox One or PlayStation 4.

This may result in a number of you writing the game away before you give it a chance, but hold on there. We've seen sports games in the past that differentiate from one another when it comes to versions available, so that doesn't necessarily mean we must write it off. FIFA 18 is different, yes. But for a first-time sports business on the Nintendo Switch, it scores where it needs to -- and leaves hope that, next time around, EA Sports will give it the push it needs to give it equivalent treatment.

First off, let's talk about the gameplay, since that's the element that really determines whether or not a sports game finds its, ahem, footing. And I can honestly state that FIFA 18 just feels right on the Switch, whether with mobile play or having fun in your home. The game seems quite accurate in regards to not just managing of the ball, but also accelerate. In reality, to compare with the Xbox One version, it's a slight bit faster, which momentum could work in favor of the players.

An Enjoyable Game, But A Bit On The Light Side

The game holds up a respectable amount of challenge in its own modes, even though there are not many to pick from -- just Kick Off and Career Mode, really. But there's enough here to learn about soccer's sensibilities and really get in the rhythm of every game, just as you would with different versions of this game. It handles quite well -- even if you're using a dinky JoyCon throughout a neighborhood two-player session. (More on this in another.)

The game also has a refreshing presentation to it. Sure, the crowds could look better (it is a slight flashback to the days of FIFA 16 on the PlayStation 3), however the on-field activity moves in a sharp pace, with great player animations and detailed fields that actually draw you into to every contest. The up-close replays are fairly natural as well. It is a good looking game, despite the use of the fancy Frostbite engine, like in the other versions of the game.

A Good Soccer Game, Yearning To Be Better

In terms of online play, this is probably FIFA 18's largest limit. There is online drama, and it functions very nicely on the Nintendo Network, but there's no choice to play buddies unless they're linked to a Switch with another system. It's frustrating, because this sort of game thrives on friend invites. Again, a thing to correct for the next time around.

At least the neighborhood drama is something. Two players can hop into a game with ease using JoyCons or other controllers, and it's a blast getting into a good round. We played in a neighborhood gathering place recently and found it to be fun, condensed display and all. I guess you need to discover your multiplayer fun wherever it is possible to get it.

That's not to say it is improved in many places, just different. More manners could've been added. Functionality could have been boosted. And no doubt something needs to be done about online play.

FIFA 18 on Switch provides a few enjoyable soccer when on the pitch, but minus Guru Clubs and The Journey, and in restricting all access to FUT when you're not online, it shoots itself in the foot. Being able to play FIFA on the go or having a friend is gratifying, and if you're pleased to just play through Career Mode for the following year, then this port will satisfy your requirements and is the best mobile FIFA that you can purchase, but in comparison to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One variants, this interface is poor in any other manner.

Need FIFA 18 Coins for Switch. Nintendo Switch is a new platform that comes out this year for the first time. And as a new platform that comes with FIFA 18, it also requires a plenty of FIFA 18 Coins during the playing process.
