Rocket League has been out for over a year, but the match is constantly changing as a result of the updates and DLC added by developer Psyonix. Lately the match entered a new phase, shifting many of the core foundations that held the game up for the previous calendar year. This includes a new crate system, along with a multitude of new rare items for players to get. But, these items can't just be purchased like other new items. Instead, they need to be earned. Even though a good deal of it is luck, we have put together this guide on the best way best to get crates and infrequent items in Rocket League.
We only wish to reiterate, until the remarks explode, a lot of this is fortune. You see, each time you finish a game of Rocket League there's a random chance of receiving an item or crate, and inside that, there is another random likelihood that it is going to be a rare item. But, there have been some discoveries which will give you a much better chance at getting the things that you want.
According to players who have done more scientific research of the crate and rare item drops, there is a hidden timer running that determines when you'll find a drop. The timer is only running while actually playing a match, so sitting on the menu doesn't help, at least not a lot (more about this later). Overtime also doesn't count, so try to finish those matches early, and do not linger in OT thinking it is going to make you a crate fall sooner. According to many assessments the average in-game time spent between getting crate and item drops is about two hours, with the chance of this being a rare item or crate being down to the rarity of that specific item.
In addition to this is the series bonus, this is the point where the menu comes from. You see, for some reason, if you exit the game and reenter, it lowers your odds of obtaining a drop. Instead there just seems to be a modifier tacked on that says "if the player has been in-game for a very long time, raise the odds of a drop". Consequently, if you aren't going anywhere for a little while, and you will need a rest from Rocket League, attempt to leave the game running. This will help maintain your timer steady, and keep the series alive.

Psyonix had long talks after his meeting with Nintendo about the pros and cons, because they had to think about controllers, things like latency and other aspects. But as they heard more about the machine and manipulated the hardware, they felt better about launch Rocket League in Switch.
One of the most interesting matters Dunham shared was that Psyonix didn't commit to launch the Rocket League in Switch till April or something. That is somewhat surprising, because Nintendo introduced the game in its E3 demonstration just a few months afterwards. It was a very quick change from the confirmation of Psyonix to launch the game, to have it contained in the transmission.
The team has to perform "lots of custom work", which is required when a brand new platform is thrown into the mixture. It is a "challenge", but Dunham is "sure" that they'll address all the concerns the players might have. Dunham said it's not been as easy as switching from PlayStation / PC to Xbox, since those platforms discuss some similar principles, but Switch appears to be a bit different.
Finally, when asked about voice chat, Dunham said that it is a little complicated to respond given that Psyonix is not certain at what stage they will be at the launch.
