Running back Ahmad Bradshaw is back with the Indianapolis Colts. The veteran running back signed a one-year deal with the team Wednesday. The move is not too surprising because Bradshaw had a workout with the Colts last week. With the addition of Bradshaw, the Colts gain some much need experience in their backfield.
Bradshaw had spent the previous two seasons with Colts. Unfortunately, Bradshaw finished both of those seasons with significant injuries. This season, he had been recovering from broken leg, which he suffered after playing 10 games for the Colts last season. His leg tested out fine when he worked out for the Colts, and he should be ready to play immediately. If Bradshaw plays as well as he did last season, he will be a very solid midseason pickup.
Bradshaw was the Colts most efficient running back last season. He totaled 425 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns on 90 carries. He also caught 38 passes for 300 receiving yards and six receiving touchdowns. His ability to catch the ball out of the backfield helped the Colts get first downs and get touchdowns close to the goal line. The Colts could really use this skillset because they have not been the greatest at moving the ball in their opponent’s territory.
Bradshaw now gives the Colts a very reliable option behind starting running back Frank Gore. The Colts running backs are currently Gore, rookie Josh Robinson and Zurlon Tipton. Meanwhile, the Colts placed undrafted rookie running back Tyler Varga on injury reserve in order to make room for Bradshaw. Varga has been dealing with a concussion over the past few weeks. Bradshaw will most likely become Gore’s primary backup because Robinson has had issues fumbling the football, and Tipton has not been productive. As long as Bradshaw stays healthy, he will get his opportunities to help the Colts.
Bradshaw should be able to play immediately because he is familiar with the Colts’ offensive scheme. He will probably be available for the Colts’ upcoming game against the New England Patriots. He has been a very productive running back over his career. It is hard to say what effect Bradshaw will have in his third season with the Colts. However, the Colts’ backfield looks much more stable now as opposed to when the season started six weeks ago.
