Flames' Lance Bouma to miss three months with broken fibula

Thursday, October 15, 2015 9:01:50 AM America/Los_Angeles

The Calgary Flames are off to an underwhelming 1-2, but now they'll have to contend with an injury to one of their better depth players as well. General manager Brad Treliving confirmed to Sportsnet's Hockey Central show Wednesday that forward Lance Bouma sustained a broken fibula in Tuesday night's loss to the St. Louis Blues. He is expected to miss three months following surgery.

Bouma has been held off the score sheet in the three games he's played this season, but is coming off of a career year in 2014-15. He scored 16 goals and put up 34 points in 78 games last year. That's pretty solid production out of a bottom-six forward. Sure, it was aided by an exorbitant 15.4 shooting percentage, but he could have been expected to put up some points in 2015-16.

Bouma was injured after a hit from Blues forward Ryan Reaves. It looked like a routine hit in the boards, but the Flames forward's skate may have caught the ice in the wrong way before slamming into the boards. He immediately came up favoring the leg and then got knocked down again by Reaves.

This isn't an injury that's going to kill the Flames by any means, but Bouma was one of the contributors to the team's success last season with 16 goals. Depth was really important to the team during their surprise run last season and will be again this year as they look to prove they're not a one-hit wonder.
