At 3-8, the San Diego Chargers' issues aren't limited to just special teams. But on Wednesday, the Chargers decided to fire special teams coordinator Kevin Spencer, who has held the job since 2013.
The Chargers announced that assistant Craig Aukerman will handle Spencer's duties for the remainder of the season.
This season, the Chargers' unit has struggled under Spencer's guidance. Football Outsiders has the entire unit ranked No. 30 in the NFL. Punter Mike Scifres has the second worst net average (37.1 yards) in the league. The Chargers have gained just 34 yards all season long on punt returns, which is actually an improvement considering the team was previously on pace to set an all-time record for the fewest punt return yards in a season.
Though the return game improved, flaws still exist. Last week, the San Diego suffered a blocked punt against the Jaguars. The Chargers overcame that error and won their third game of the season, but Spencer did not survive his unit's latest blunder.
